Glyndebourne

Took Alex to Hansel und Gretel, his first opera. Apart from the weather - for which it would be unfair to hold Glyndebourne responsible - it was a magical day. We attended the family workshop before the performance, which was outstanding. In a short hour we learned the plot, sang a little of the music, had a go at directing two of the cast members and had the chance to quiz them on what it's like to be an opera singer.

The opera was staged in a modern adaptation which comments on our consumer society. The cardboard house where the children lived was particularly creative, and converting the gingerbread house to a supermarket filled with all the things their parents couldn't afford was effective, too. The performances were all very strong, but the witch absolutely stole the show. Alex loved both the workshop and the performance and wants to go again. I would, too, but would insist on better weather next time, so we could enjoy our picnic in the grounds.
